Music Culture
I grew up spending a lot of time with my mom. In doing that, I was able to listen to a lot of the music that she would. She was a stay at home mom when I was little, so she was always cooking or doing things around the house, and she had to have her radio on. Even when she went back to work, the kitchen was filled with the sounds of Smokey Robinson and Johnny Mathis in the afternoons and on weekends. She listened to a lot of old soul and R&B music. I knew who Jackie Wilson and the Temptations were before I knew about anyone from my generation. I could hum along, and even sing, with some of the songs. She would teach me the dances that she used to do when she was growing up, and those sorts of things. I have a great appreciation for that music now. It is nothing to find me listening to “an old Motown’s greatest hit” type song in the car. When I was little, my older siblings were into rap, and at the time 90’s R&B, so when I got a chance to listen to it I immediately fell in love. To me there is nothing better than an early 90’s R&B song. It seems to make for a good day. I guess you can say this is my music culture. My inherited culture at least. It is what I was born into, in a way. This music was what was around when I was able to listen and understand it. Since I’ve been able to search and listen to music of my choice, I’ve branched out from “my roots”. I listen to just about everything now. I like anything that has what I consider nice music and a good melody. It can be anything from pop to country. To look at my music culture as a whole, I guess it would be wise to add everything that I like into it. It is like a big melting pot of everything me.

I couldnt agree more with your ending statement of your music culture. I came from the same place with the beginning of my music culture hearing it from my parents. I really like how you incorporate your mom's music with your music and beyond, to me thats wholeness. I believe everyone learns music from what they hear when they are young, especially from your parents. Nice piece!
ReplyDeletei could say for me that i listened to a lot of my moms music too when i was little and stopped listening until i was in high school. she listened to fleetwood mac all the time and in recent years i have loved this band more because it reminds me of her. Family is definitley a key part to the types of music we like as we get older.
ReplyDeleteIt's great that your mother was able to share her musical tastes with you at such an early age. For me, most of my musical tastes were developed through my father who listened to Eric Clapton, Elton John, and Blue Oyster Cult. I think that's why the music I prefer to listen to today has such strong roots in blues and rock. I listen to about everything now, but those will always be my go-to's
